THE PREDICTION

World number four Daniil Medvedev passed a significant test on Monday in coming back from a set down to Sebastian Korda, who has often posed a serious threat to the Russian. The 28-year-old overcame Korda 7-4 in their second set tiebreak to turn the tide but back-to-back three-set matches already in Madrid suggests he is struggling to find his feet on what remains his weakest surface despite an incredible run to the Rome Masters title this time last year.

26-year-old Alexander Bublik similarly came back from a set down to oust fellow big-server Ben Shelton on Monday, turning the tide 7-2 in their second set tiebreak to also make the round of 16 in back-to-back three-setters. The Kazakh will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 17th for his efforts so far but he has lost each of his five previous meetings with Medvedev, including on clay at Roland-Garros in 2021. Both players would prefer this sixth meeting took place on their favoured hardcourt surface but back Medvedev to come through this test outright, with three sets about as likely as two.

TIP: DANIIL MEDVEDEV TO WIN
