THE PREDICTION
This should be another thrilling encounter between world number two Aryna Sabalenka and 30-year-old Danielle Collins, who can move back up to world number 10 if she manages to beat the Belarussian for the first time. 25-year-old Sabalenka came back from a set down to snap Collins’ insatiable 14-match winning streak at the Madrid Open two weeks ago to take a convincing 5-0 lead in their head-to-head record but three of that five have seen sets go both ways and each of their last two have seen Collins take the first set. Sabalenka went on to finish runner-up to world number one Iga Swiatek in a modern classic in Madrid, playing herself into form against Collins three rounds earlier, but she has not been spotless in Rome with dropped sets in two matches suggesting there is a route through for her opponent.
Collins announced that she will retire at the end of the season a few months ago and she has played like a woman possessed ever since, winning her most prestigious title at the Miami Masters, on home soil, and backing it up with a trophy on clay at the Charleston Open. The American beat Victoria Azarenka in straight sets on Wednesday to maintain her spotless run so far but Sabalenka is, in many ways, if not slightly reductively, a slightly more powerful version of herself with a super-charged serve. Expect another intense battle, with three sets likelier than two, but back Sabalenka to edge through once again.
TIP: ARYNA SABALENKA TO WIN
