THE PREDICTION

World number 13 Taylor Fritz came back from a set down to Frances Tiafoe on Wednesday, backing up an assured victory over Andy Murray in the first round. The 24-year-old recently won the third ATP title of his career at the Eastbourne International, where he won his first in 2019, before a huge run to the quarter-finals of Wimbledon ended in a gut-wrenching five-set defeat to Rafael Nadal. The last player to beat him was next Montreal opponent Dan Evans, who came back from a set down to go 4-1 up in the third at last week’s Washington Open before Fritz was forced to retire with a foot issue. 32-year-old Evans has since bettered that result with an excellent victory over world number eight Andrey Rublev here on Wednesday, backing up a solid result over Filip Krajinovic. The Brit knows he can beat Fritz after last week’s endeavours but the American is in better shape one week on and still the clear favourite to come through. The suitably cautious pick is for Fritz to win at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors but the 10th seed should be coming through outright here.
