THE PREDICTION

This could be a thrilling clash between two vastly different, but equally mesmerising, styles of play in backhand-slice king Dan Evans and maverick first-serve-or-bust Alexander Bublik. World number 40 Evans beat the Kazakh in straight sets here in Adelaide back in 2020 but world number 31 Bublik leads their head-to-head 3-1 with the sort of serve that Evans tends to have few answers for on tour. 33-year-old Evans endured an odd season last year, with a first ATP 500 title won at the Washington Open and a magical week in the Davis Cup Group Stages making up for poor form elsewhere, but a serious calf injury suffered at the Vienna Open ended it early.

A straight-sets victory over Rinky Hijikata on Tuesday was an encouraging first match back since but 26-year-old Bublik can be unplayable if he finds his rhythm on serve. This is possibly the toughest match to pick on Wednesday, at any tournament, but at a push back Bublik to earn at least a set with the capability to take Evans’ weapons out of his hands.

TIP: ALEXANDER BUBLIK TO WIN A SET
