THE PREDICTION
This promises to be a thrilling first encounter between world number 78 Daniel Altmaier and number 81 Luca Nardi, the latter of whom has been handed an important debut on the Grand Stand Arena to boost his home advantage. 20-year-old Nardi made headlines worldwide when he stunned an out-of-sorts Novak Djokovic in three sets at Indian Wells in March but he has failed to win a tour-level match since, although victory at the Napoli Challenger last month hands him plenty of clay form coming into Rome.
25-year-old Altmaier enjoyed a similarly impressive upset over fellow German Alexander Zverev at the Mexican Open in February but he is at his best on clay, despite what recent results suggest. Altmaier stunned Jannik Sinner in five sets at Roland-Garros to prove his ability in these conditions but a 3-4 record in clay so far suggests he may struggle to get past Nardi backed by a partisan atmosphere late on Thursday. Take Nardi to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
