World number 27 Felix Auger-Aliassime will play his first match of the season after pulling out injured from the United Cup last week – something of a missed opportunity for Canada after Leylah Fernandez put in such a huge shift to lift the Billie Jean King Cup for their nation in November. The 23-year-old will not want to see this season as a rebuilding project, with some serious ambitions, but that is what it must be over the next few months following a truly woeful 2023 that was saved from total travesty by defending his Swiss Indoors title in Basel.
World number 57 Daniel Altmaier is at his best on clay but there is plenty of potential in his entertaining game for success on hardcourts too, with Sunday’s victory over Marcos Giron an eye-catching result. The 25-year-old was soundly beaten by Grigor Dimitrov at this stage of Brisbane last week but that result has certainly gotten better with age, whilst Auger-Aliassime’s level is a total unknown at present.
