19-year-old Arthur Fils set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 32nd after a brilliant run to the quarter-finals of the Barcelona Open, beating Daniel Altmaier in the first round before a huge upset over fourth seed Alex de Minaur. The Frenchman fell short against an inspired Dusan Lajovic this tie last week but he should be brimming with confidence in this third clash with Altmaier this season, having won both to take a 2-1 lead in their head-to-head. World number 61 Altmaier is at his bets in these conditions, though, and he beat Fils in Paris last November in their first encounter, with injury seeing him out of their second in Auckland in January. The 25-year-old beat wildcard Martin Landaluce in straight sets on Wednesday but this looks a much steeper task against Fils, who will be desperate to roll on this form after a poor start to 2024. Back the Frenchman to win.
