19-year-old Jerry Shang brings a career-high ATP world ranking of 111th into his Madrid Open debut, earning a wildcard after an impressive start to 2024. The Chinese reached the semi-finals of the Hong Kong Open in January, taking eventual champion Andrey Rublev to three sets before defeat, and he made the third round at the Australian Open before running out of steam against Carlos Alcaraz. World number 88 Corentin Moutet is the more accomplished clay-courter here, though, and he qualified handily this week after a strong run to the quarter-finals of the Bucharest Open last week. It took eventual champion Marton Fucsovics to oust the tricky Frenchman there but Shang’s uber-positive streak should aid him in this first encounter with a true antagonist of the sport.
