THE PREDICTION
World number three Coco Gauff conceded just three games in an encouraging opener over Nadia Podoroska on Friday but she suffered another earlier-than-anticipated defeat in the doubles alongside Jessica Pegula. The 20-year-old may have to make a decision on her doubles future sooner rather than later as the pair’s form continues to dwindle but she looks capable of rolling through to the last 16 here on home turf in Miami, backed to the hilt as she will be as both the US number one and a Florida native.
World number 84 Oceane Dodin overcame Arantxa Rus in three sets on Friday after squeaking through to the second round as a lucky loser from qualifying but this looks far too steep of a challenge. The 27-year-old enjoyed a career-best run to the last 16 at the Australian Open in January but a consummate defeat to eventual runner-up Qinwen Zheng looks a decent benchmark for the outcome here. Back Gauff to win in fewer than 16.5 games.
