World number three Coco Gauff fought back from a first-set bagel but she still fell to Iga Swiatek in straight sets for a ninth time in 10 matches against the Pole. 19-year-old Gauff finally beat Swiatek for the first time en-route to the Cincinnati Masters title in August, enjoying blistering form that saw her go on to lift her maiden Grand Slam trophy at the US Open. Gauff also won the Washington Open in early August, meaning only Swiatek (twice) and Jessica Pegula have beaten the American since the start of the hardcourt swing.
World number six Marketa Vondrousova has lost both of her WTA Finals rubbers so far, in straight sets first to Iga Swiatek and then Ons Jabeur. The 24-year-old produced a remarkable run to the Wimbledon title in July, beating Jabeur in the final, but she has struggled with her form since suffering with a shoulder issue at the US Open.
THE PREDICTION
This match is still live from Coco Gauff’s perspective as she faces a race to qualify fir the semi-finals with Ons Jabeur, who faces the much more daunting challenge of tackling in-form Iga Swiatek. The teenager fulfilled her destiny and then some this summer, exploding into form across August and September, but two defeats in two events to Swiatek are a harsh reminder that she still needs to improve against the very best. Vondrousova has nothing to play for but pride here and she trails Gauff 2-0 in their head-to-head. Back the American to do her best to qualify for the semi-finals with an outright win.
