COCO GAUFF 2023 US Open champion, 2022 Roland-Garros runner-up

World number three Coco Gauff looks to be steadily improving her overall game on clay in recent weeks, enjoying a run to the semi-finals of the Italian Open before a spotless run to the last 16 at Roland-Garros.

The 20-year-old is still struggling to get the majority of her first serves into play but her talent is such that it has not cost her a set yet in Paris, with her ability to win ugly the mark of a multiple major champion in the making. Gauff’s record against Iga Swiatek is wholly unconvincing but she could benefit more than anyone if the defending champion were to be crash out of the draw.

ELISABETTA COCCIARETTO First round of 16 at a Grand Slam

World number 51 Elisabetta Cocciaretto is through the round of 16 of a Grand Slam for the first time after upsetting 17th seed Liudmila Samsonova, further proving her credentials on this surface after coming back from a set down to stun Beatriz Haddad-Maia in the first round. The 23-year-old won her maiden WTA title at the Lausanne Ladies Open on her favoured clay last summer, setting a career-high world ranking of 29th soon after.

COCO GAUFF VS ELISABETTA COCCIARETTO PREDICTION

Coco Gauff has twice beaten Elisabetta Cocciaretto in straight sets to lead 2-0 in their head-to-head, most recent at the Dubai Masters in February. A first meeting on clay should help boost Cocciaretto’s efficacy in their rallies but Gauff has all the grit and pace to thrive in these conditions too and it should worry the rest of the draw that she is winning her matches in straight sets despite problems on her serve. Back the American to come through in two.
