THE PREDICTION
Defending champion and top seed Coco Gauff has blasted through the competition this week in Auckland but she will face by far her toughest foe yet in Elina Svitolina, who has twice fought back from sets down in an impressive run. World number 25 Svitolina was seeded second this week after a remarkable resurgence back up the rankings last season in which she made the quarter-finals and semi-finals of Roland-Garros and Wimbledon, respectively, just months after returning from maternity leave. The former number three beat Gauff in their only previous encounter, at the Australian Open just under three years ago, but the current number three is a totally different prospect now as she begins her first full season as a Grand Slam champion.
Svitolina has beaten former world number one Caroline Wozniacki, 2021 US Open champion Emma Raducanu and two tough foes in Marie Bouzkova and Xiyu Wang this week whilst Gauff has coasted on a higher plain. Being battle-hardened may favour Svitolina here but take Gauff to just-about defend her title in a tight result.
