20-year-old Coco Gauff can set a new career-high WTA world ranking of second this week if she significantly out-performs defending Madrid champion Aryna Sabalenka and she made a statement start by double-bagelling Arantxa Rus in less than an hour. The American has struggled with her erratic game so far this season, despite making huge runs to the semi-finals of the Australian Open and Indian Wells, but she looks well capable of rolling through to the last 16 here against Dayana Yastremska. World number 34 Yastremska enjoyed her own big campaign in Melbourne, repairing her long-dormant ranking with a surprise run to the semi-finals, but she has failed to win back-to-back matches since. The 23-year-old will be up for the challenge here as a big game player but Gauff can be backed to take their first encounter in straight sets if she can match her opening performance.
