The ever-inexplicable Caroline Garcia put in one of her best performances in months on Sunday to beat former number one Naomi Osaka in straight sets, doing so in a similar fashion to her remarkable win over the returning Japanese in Melbourne back in January. Former number four Garcia is well capable of these kind of results, with a purple patch two seasons ago seeing her win four titles in half a year including the Cincinnati Masters and WTA Finals, but she has struggled to find any sort of consistency since the start of 2023. Garcia failed to build on her victory over Osaka at the Australian Open to suggest world number three Coco Gauff remains the solid favourite here, particularly as she has played convincingly solid so far on home soil in Miami.
The 20-year-old will be backed to the hilt as a Florida native in this likely thriller on Monday and her best battling qualities should be able to limit Garcia’s elusive world-beating serving.
