THE PREDICTION
20-year-old Coco Gauff can set a new career-high WTA world ranking if second this week if she significantly out-performs defending champion Aryna Sabalenka, although that seems unlikely given her recent performances. The American’s remarkable purple patch last summer saw her lift a first WTA 500 title in Washington, a first Masters title in Cincinnati and then a maiden Grand Slam at the US Open but she has struggled to find her bullish best tennis practically ever since - with her run to the semi-finals in Melbourne in January wholly impressive at sub-par.
Gauff needed three sets to out Sachia Vickery in Stuttgart last week before a tight, choppy defeat to eventual runner-up Marta Kostyuk and this is no gimme against an experienced clay-court enthusiast in Arantxa Rus, who stunned Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in Rouen last week. Gauff should be blasting through in straight sets here but taking her to come through outright is the suitably cautious call.
