THE PREDICTION
World number 122 Olga Danilovic beat two tough foes in qualifying, Jule Niemeier and Bogota champion Camila Osorio, in straight sets apiece this week to look a dark horse for a run in Madrid. The 23-year-old reached the third round of Roland-Garros last summer before a three-set exit to Ons Jabeur but she was forced to end her season early after the US Open, playing just a handful of times this year. Clara Burel, also 23, brings a career-high WTA world ranking of 44th into Madrid after a strong start to 2024 but she has struggled to make a dent on her favoured clay so far this season, losing two of three matches played on the surface this month. The Frenchwoman beat Danilovic en-route to the Ladies Lausanne Open final last summer but the Serb’s qualifying results suggest this could be a vengeful response. Back Danilovic to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
