23-year-old Clara Burel put last weekend’s tough defeat to Katie Boulter in the Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers behind her with a comeback over Katarina Zavatska on Tuesday. The Frenchwoman brought a career-high WTA world ranking of 44th into Rouen after a strong start to the season saw a third round exit at the Australian Open and a quarter-final run at the Linz 500 but her best results have come clay so far, twice finishing runner-up at the Lausanne Ladies Open in 2021 and 2023. World number 162 Elena-Gabriela Ruse is also at her best on clay, winning her maiden WTA title at the Hamburg Open three years ago, and she is capable of much better tennis than her current deflated ranking suggests. The Romanian is yet to drop a set from qualifying through to the round of 16 but Burel has the benefit of home support on her side, to whom she will be eager to make amends.
