THE PREDICTION
World number 66 Christopher O’Connell overcame a huge assault by tour debutant Martin Damm on Sunday, surviving two tiebreaks to set his best ever showing at a Masters event. The 29-year-old became the latest player to stun an out-of-sorts Frances Tiafoe in the previous round, backing-up an excellent comeback over Jack Draper at Indian Wells earlier this month, but he has been unfortunate to draw perhaps the shortest straw in Miami.
World number three Jannik Sinner finished runner-up to Daniil Medvedev here last season but he has evolved into a clear future number one since, coming back from two sets down to beat Medvedev to the Australian Open in January during a 19-match winning streak. The 22-year-old saw that streak snapped in the semi-finals of Indian Wells two week ago, losing to peer and rival Carlos Alcaraz, but he has reacted well this campaign to look a contender. Sinner had to come back from a set down to beat Tallon Griekspoor on Sunday but he should be better for the scare to come through this clash in straight sets, dashing O’Connell’s current 1-0 lead in their head-to-head.
TIP: JANNIK SINNER TO WIN 2-0
