THE PREDICTION
This should be a fascinating clash between two Americans desperately seeking a return to form on tour. World number 34 Christopher Eubanks began his wild ascent up the rankings with a brilliant run to the quarter-finals at the Miami Open this time last season, going on to win a maiden title at the Mallorca Championships and reach the quarter-finals at Wimbledon before losing momentum on the late hardcourt swing. Former number 43 Brandon Nakashima won the San Diego Open in his home town in the summer of 2022 but his form took a nosedive after finishing runner-up to Sebastian Korda at the Next Gen ATP Finals later that year. The 22-year-old is even more of a home player than Eubanks as the California native here and he has been working hard to repair his ranking in recent weeks, moving back inside the top 100 recently after some strong work on the Challenger circuit to bring some solid form into this tough opener.
Eubanks beat Nakashima in three sets on his own home turf in Atlanta last summer but the pair are tied 1-1 at tour-level after Nakashima won their Miami clash two years ago, also in three. Perhaps the best way to avoid a winner here is taking at least one tiebreak in the match, with at least one played in each of their four career meetings.
TIP: OVER 0.5 TIEBREAKS
