THE PREDICTION

Former world number four Caroline Garcia has been threatening to return to form in recent weeks, reaching the quarter-finals of the Miami Open before coming unstuck against an unstoppable eventual champion in Danielle Collins and last week making the semi-finals in Rouen – also losing to the eventual champion there in Sloane Stephens. The 30-year-old, currently ranked 24th, is probably at her most effective on clay but when she finds her elusive best tennis she is a match for anybody on any surface. World number 42 Xinyu Wang came back from a set down to beat Viktoriya Tomova on Wednesday but clay has so far proven to be her least favoured surface. The 22-year-old possesses plenty of the tools required to make the most of Madrid’s high altitude but Garcia’s serve should make her even tougher to break down. Take Garcia to win their first encounter.

TIP: CAROLINE GARCIA TO WIN
