THE PREDICTION
This could be a thrilling, quality contest between two of the more naturally gifted stars of the WTA tour but it could just as easily be a drab affair. Former world number four Caroline Garcia and former number five Jelena Ostapenko are two of the more unpredictable players on tour and this feels like a clash in which the two will find their best, and worst, at alternating times. 30-year-old Garcia took an impressive set from world number one Iga Swiatek at the United Cup last week but she just as quickly dropped one to Aussie wildcard Taylah Preston here on Tuesday to cut her usual intermittent figure.
26-year-old Ostapenko came back from a set down to oust Sorana Cirstea on Monday, building on some encouraging signs from Brisbane last week, but her defeat to Victoria Azarenka in a bad-tempered clash last Friday depicts a player struggling to find her rhythm on court. Three sets look a decent way to avoid a result here but on recent form the result probably edges towards Ostapenko, who won their only previous encounter back in 2019.
