THE PREDICTION

This promises to be a thrilling first encounter between world number one Carlos Alcaraz and number 10 Taylor Fritz, who claimed a title each this time last season at the Miami Open and Indian Wells, respectively. 19-year-old Alcaraz is aiming to complete the rare Sunshine Double this time around after winning Indian Wells two weeks ago and he made it nine wins on the spin on Tuesday with an assured straight-sets result over Tommy Paul. 25-year-old Fritz was impressive in a straight-sets victory over Holger Rune on Tuesday to also make the quarter-finals without dropping a set but recent defeats to Jannik Sinner at Indian Wells and Tommy Paul at the Mexican Open suggest he will struggle to match the Spaniard’s level here. The home crowd will get behind Fritz here but it is unlikely to be a partisan atmosphere with Alcaraz already becoming a global fans’ favourite of the sport. Back Alcaraz to win outright here but two sets are just about likelier than three.
