THE PREDICTION

World number 31 Cam Norrie put in one of his best performances of the season to blast past home hopeful Roberto Bautista Agut on Thursday, backing-up a choppy opener over Harold Mayot. The former number eight has won a clay tournament at this level, his most recent at the Rio 500 last February, but the majority of last season felt like a depreciation from the peak of his powers and there have only been fleeting glimpses of a return.

World number 30 Tomas Martin Etcheverry came back from a set down to beat a resurgent Brandon Nakashima on Thursday, backing-up a solid opener over qualifier Nick Hardt, but he has struggled to capitalise on his surge up the rankings, built mostly on his brilliant run to the quarter-finals at Roland-Garros last summer. Failed attempts to claim a maiden ATP title on the South American swing in February looked to take their toll on his confidence last month but this is now a huge opportunity for both players to make the weekend of a prestigious event. Norrie came back from a set down to beat the Argentine in Buenos Aires last season but Etcheverry looks the slight favourite this time around, so take him to earn at least a set to leave this tight call up to chance.
