World number 47 Arantxa Rus enjoyed an excellent run to the quarter-finals of the Rouen Open last week, upsetting top seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in three sets before a tight exit to eventual runner-up Magda Linette. The 33-year-old finally won her maiden WTA title, despite an illustrious career spent claiming titles off of the main tour, last summer on clay at the Hamburg Open and she looks the slight favourite on form coming into this intriguing first encounter with 17-year-old wildcard Brenda Fruhvirtova. The world number 106 has played just three tournaments this season after injury saw her retire against Katie Boulter at the Miami Open last month but she has, notably, won each of her opening matches so far, including over Anna Blinkova at the Auckland Classic. The Czech clearly has a bright future on tour but back veteran Rus to edge this encounter, particularly with the experience of Madrid’s unique altitude behind her.
