THE PREDICTION

World number 81 Brandon Nakashima edged through two tiebreaks against Camilo Carabelli on Tuesday to qualify for the main draw here in Madrid as he continues what promises to be something or a resurgence. The 22-year-old won his maiden ATP title in his native San Diego in the summer of 2022 and later won the Next Gen ATP Finals to suggest he was on the up but 2023 was a season to forget. Straight-set wins over Dan Evans and second seed Andrey Rublev in Barcelona last week were hugely encouraging, as was a competitive three-set exit to Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the quarter-finals, but world number 136 Facundo Bagnis is no pushover on his favoured clay.

The Argentine finished runner-up to Luciano Darderi at the Cordoba Open in February and he came second at the Santiago Challenger a month later to bring some solid form into Madrid, with a victory over David Goffin in qualifying to show for it. Back Nakashima to reach the second round with three sets about as likely as two.

TIP: BRANDON NAKASHIMA TO WIN
