THE PREDICTION

21-year-old Brandon Nakashima set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 47th this week and he made it six wins in a row on Monday after claiming his maiden ATP title at his native San Diego Open two weeks ago. The American had been promising a campaign like San Diego for some time, with a run to the round of 16 at Wimbledon ended in five tight sets by eventual finalist Nick Kyrgios and a four-set defeat to Jannik Sinner at the US Open. World number 28 Borna Coric is a tough draw this early on, though, with the Croat only recently claiming the biggest title of his career at the Cincinnati Masters. A straight-sets victory over Thanasi Kokkinakis on Tuesday is only the Croat’s second win on tour since beating Stefanos Tsitsipas in the Cincinnati final but he looks in good shape enough to sit as the just-about favourite in this first meeting with Nakashima. However, the American’s strong winning run suggests siding with him to take at least a set is the shrewd way to avoid picking a winner.
