THE PREDICTION

28-year-old Botic van de Zandschulp set a career-high ATP world ranking of 22nd in 2022, one year on from reaching the quarter-finals of the US Open, but he has fallen back as far as 89th this week after a tough 12 months on tour. The Dutchman has finished runner-up to Holger Rune in each of the past two seasons here in Munich, with that second defeat seemingly knocking the stuffing out of his once dependable all-court intensity, and this feels like a hugely significant week for his career. A three-set victory over Ivan Gakhov on Tuesday does not suggest he has enough to upset world number 28 Jan-Lennard Struff, who received a bye to the round of 16 as the fourth seed in Munich, but Van de Zandschulp should not be underestimated at a tournament he clearly has a complicated relationship with. 33-year-old Struff beat Sebastian Baez and Borna Coric last week in Monte-Carlo to look a tough factor across the clay swing but backing the German to earn at least a set here is the suitably cautious move.

TIP: JAN-LENNARD STRUFF TO WIN A SET
