World number 16 Ben Shelton avoided an early banana skin with a straight-sets victory over Fabian Marozsan, building on a tight three-set defeat to Roman Safiullin in Brisbane last week. The 21-year-old burst onto the scene this time last season with an incredible run to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open, and he usurped that with an even more impressive semi-final exit to Novak Djokovic at the US Open, but he struggled on his debut ATP tour season until very late on, beating Aslan Karatsev to the Tokyo Open title in October.
World number 67 Roberto Carballes Baena enjoyed his best season on tour with some eye-catching performances and a second title claimed at the Marrakech Open on his favoured clay but he looks capable of more this year after two surprising straight-set wins over Roberto Bautista Agut and Sebastian Ofner this week in Auckland. The 30-year-old should struggle to combat Shelton’s left-handed piledriver of a serve but it would be wise not to underestimate him in this first meeting with Shelton, who only just snapped a four-match losing streak since winning in Tokyo. Back the American to win outright, with three sets about as likely as two.
