World number 16 Ben Shelton is coming up to the anniversary of his breakthrough run to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open, since which he eclipsed with a remarkable semi-final exit to Novak Djokovic in New York, but he is in real danger of returning to Melbourne without a win in 2024. A three-set exit to Roman Safiullin at this stage of the Brisbane International was no great embarrassment but Shelton has yet to really find his big-game tennis on a smaller stage and world number 65 Fabian Marozsan has pedigree for upsetting a top seed. The Hungarian came out of the blue to stun Carlos Alcaraz at the Rome Masters last May and he overcame former number six Gael Monfils in three sets on Monday to look dialled-in in Auckland.
Shelton should be better for an early upset last week but this first meeting with Marozsan is tougher than it looks. Back the American to earn at least a set as the likelier of two very capable victors.
