THE PREDICTION

World number 12 Belinda Bencic played well on Wednesday night to beat Serena Williams in straight sets and that result, no matter the condition of the former world number one, should provide a huge confidence boost to the 25-year-old. Bencic announced herself as a serious player here back in 2015 with a run to her maiden WTA title, a Masters at that, as a teenager with results over the likes of Simona Halep, Caroline Wozniacki and, again, Serena Williams. The Swiss should be considered an outside contender for a second title this week, with her first also coming in Toronto, and she has a fair chance of reaching the quarter-finals against Garbine Muguruza. 28-year-old Muguruza claimed one of the best wins of her season on Wednesday with a straight-sets result over Kaia Kanepi but the Spaniard has managed to win back-to-back matches just once this season in what has been a concerning downturn from ending 2021 the WTA Finals champion. Muguruza could be about to rediscover her mojo but Bencic is already in form with serious experience here. Back the Swiss to win outright, with their current head-to-head finely poised at 1-1.
