THE PREDICTION
World number 13 Beatriz Haddad-Maia endured a tough start to 2024 but she looks ready to return to form just in time for another tilt at glory at Roland-Garros. The 27-year-old finished last season as the WTA Elite Trophy champion to cap off an excellent year that saw her break the top 10 for the first time and reach a Grand Slam semi-final in Paris, where she was competitive in defeat to eventual champion Iga Swiatek, and she took Swiatek to three sets in Madrid last week to further prove her credentials in these conditions.
A straight-sets victory over a resurgent Maria Sakkari in the round of 16 in Madrid last Monday says the Brazilian should have far too much for world number 42 Xinyu Wang but the Chinese won their most recent clash in Qatar back in February and she came back well against Yue Yuan on Tuesday. Haddad-Maia leads their head-to-head 2-1 at tour level but a first clay encounter is certainly her favoured arena. Back the Brazilian to win outright inside an accumulator or in straight sets otherwise.
