THE PREDICTION

World number 13 Leylah Fernandez needed three tight sets to overcome Storm Sanders in her first match back since suffering a fracture in her foot at Roland-Garros but she will be pleased with a win at the first attempt. The 19-year-old reached the quarter-final in Paris before losing to Martina Trevisan in three sets for further proof that her run to the US Open final last season was no fluke, and she won the Monterrey Open for a second successive year back in February to make it two WTA titles so far. Fernandez beat Beatriz Haddad-Maia in the semi-final in Monterrey but since then the Brazilian has evolved into a top 30 player, winning back-to-back titles in Nottingham and Birmingham back in June. A hardcourt should favour the Canadian here but Haddad-Maia overcame the aforementioned Trevisan in three sets on Monday for a confidence booster and three sets would be no surprise here. Back Fernandez to win at least one of them and leave the winner up to chance.
