THE PREDICTION
This is a hugely high-quality first round clash between two players who enjoyed big moments on clay this time last season. 24-year-old Fabian Marozsan burst onto the scene with a shock victory over Carlos Alcaraz at the Rome Masters in May, reaching the round of 16 before defeat to Borna Coric, and he brings a career-high ATP world ranking of 37th into Madrid after recently bettering that Masters run with a quarter-final exit in Miami.
Former number 14 Aslan Karatsev is currently ranked 48th after suffering an injury in his opening match of 2024 at the Brisbane international but he will be a credible threat to Marozsan here after reaching the semi-finals this time last season, stunning Daniil Medvedev and Alex de Minaur en-route. The Russian’s top level is incredible but he has struggled to find anything like it, at least consistently, since claiming his third ATP title in Sydney at the start of 2022. Recent form says Marozsan can find a way through their first encounter but this is a very tricky call between two players nobody wanted to draw in Madrid. Back Marozsan to edge through but leave this far from an accumulator.
