THE PREDICTION

World number two Aryna Sabalenka looks to have turned a corner after several months of struggling with her games, especially her serve, with a comprehensive straight-sets victory over Jil Teichmann on Wednesday in which she served zero double faults. Having started 2022 on double fault figures hovering around the 20 mark, it was a small miracle that the 23-year-old battled her way through to the round of 16 at the Australian Open. Such is her level at her best that the Belarussian is suddenly one of the favourites to lift her fifth Masters title this weekend, having previously won the Qatar Open back in 2020. World number eight Iga Swiatek is chasing her second Masters title after winning the Italian Open last season and after a faltered start against Viktorija Golubic on Tuesday she dismissed Daria Kasatkina for three games in the round of 16. The 20-year-old looks to have recovered from the disappointment of her semi-final exit at the Australian Open last month, where she lost to runner-up Danielle Collins.

Sabalenka beat Swiatek from a set down at the WTA Finals last November in their first meeting, where both players were not quite up to their best level. This second meeting leaves plenty more questions than answers in terms of the result but three sets seem likely and that makes backing Sabalenka to win at least one of them the suitably cautious pick here. Swiatek is more than capable of blasting through in straight sets, though, in what could be a proper thriller.
