THE LOWDOWN

World number one Aryna Sabalenka overcame Elena Rybakina in three sets in especially difficult circumstances as she led a set up overnight in a delayed match and then fought back well after dropping the second early the following day. The 25-year-old won her maiden Grand Slam title at the Australian Open back in January, also beating Rybakina in three to do so, and she finished runner-up to Coco Gauff in three sets at the US Open to see her reach at least the semi-finals in each of her last five major tournaments.

World number two Iga Swiatek was usurped at the top of the sport by Aryna Sabalenka after failing to defend her US Open title in September, losing to Jelena Ostapenko in three sets in the round of 16. The 22-year-old can reclaim the vital year-end top spot if she beats Sabalenka here and goes on to win a first WTA Finals title in Cancun but she has lost to the Belarussian in each of her two previous Finals campaigns, including at this stage of Fort Worth last season. Swiatek hammered Ons Jabeur on Friday to make it 3-0 in her group and that sees her bring a nine-match winning streak into the semi-finals after she claimed a fifth Masters title at the China Open last month.

THE PREDICTION

Aryna Sabalenka has struggled with the conditions in Cancun more than most, losing to Jessica Pegula on Tuesday to come through her group 2-1, but she should be ready and willing for the scrap here with the year-end world number one spot on the line. Sabalenka beat Swiatek in three tight sets to win the Madrid Masters in May, avenging a defeat to the Pole in the Stuttgart final before that, but Swiatek leads their head-to-head 5-3 overall with the pair currently level at 2-2 on hardcourts. Swiatek has looked refreshed and hungry since losing world number one and that should give her the edge in this monumental clash with Sabalenka, who has not looked at her best since losing the US Open final to Coco Gauff. Back Swiatek to edge through a likely thriller outright.

BETTING TIP: Iga Swiatek to win.
