THE PREDICTION
23-year-old Arantxa Rus brought a career-high WTA world ranking of 39th into the Hobart International after a decent run to the quarter-finals in Auckland were ended by eventual champion Coco Gauff last week. The Frenchwoman overcame Peyton Stearns in three sets on Monday to look a threat to the latter stages but this is no gimme against world number 50 Arantxa Rus, who ousted Czech up-and-comer Linda Fruhvirtova in three sets of her own. 33-year-old Rus finally won her maiden WTA title at the Hamburg Open last summer, to complement a trophy room full of ITF titles from the past decade, and it will be interesting to see how she fares at WTA 250 events this year with boosted confidence. Hardcourt conditions Gracheva in this first meeting between the two but given their opening results it looks sensible to back her to earn at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors.
