THE PREDICTION
Former world number one Angelique Kerber is yet to win a Masters 1000 event but the German can count three Grand Slam trophies amongst her 14 career titles, winning the Australian Open and US Open in 2016 and Wimbledon a year later. The 36-year-old returned to tour from maternity leave at the start of this season to help Germany win the United Cup but she has struggled to find wins so far, bringing a 1-6 record into this intriguing opener at Indian Wells. Kerber was a finalist here as recently as 2019 and her flat, uber-defensive game should take well to the slower conditions here in the desert.
However, former number 14 Petra Martic also possesses the disruptive skills to make this a potential thriller in the first round. The 33-year-old has struggled to find form so far this season but competitive defeats to the likes of Naomi Osaka in recent weeks suggest she has enough to edge through. Kerber’s level is unknowable at this stage but she is well capable of finding rhythm here as a potential dark horse in the draw. Back Martic to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
TIP: PETRA MARTIC TO WIN A SET
