THE PREDICTION

Former world number one Angelique Kerber won the 14th WTA title of her career on Saturday in a thrilling three-set victory over Kaja Juvan at the Strasbourg Open. The 34-year-old won last season’s Bad Homburg Open on grass just before Wimbledon in form that came out of the blue and she went on to reach the semi-finals there to suggest she could now be a dark horse for a deep run at Roland-Garros. Kerber is a three-time Grand Slam champion with one each from Wimbledon (2018), the Australian Open and US Open (both 2016) and completing the career slam would be the suitable way to end the popular German’s illustrious career.

24-year-old Magdalena Frech will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 89th this week after some decent form across the clay swing so far. The Pole might have fancied her chances against Kerber before this week, with the German in below par form since contracting covid-19 at the start of the year, but now this first meeting looks like going only one way. Kerber’s story will be a popular sub-plot at Roland-Garros and she can make it six wins on the spin with victory here.
