THE PREDICTION

World number 80 Max Purcell fought back impressively to beat Marcos Giron in three tight sets on Thursday, proving to himself perhaps most of all that he can perform on clay. The 26-year-old has enjoyed the best of his tennis on grass and hardcourts in recent seasons, with last summer’s purple patch across the late hardcourt swing seeing him asset a career-high of 40th, but it will be interesting to see what he can achieve over the coming weeks if he can maintain this intensity. World number 26 Sebastian Korda won his maiden ATP title on clay at the Emilia-Romagna Open in 2022 but his languid, elegant all-court game can excel anywhere if only he could find any sort of consistency. The 23-year-old stunned Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-1 6-2 two weeks ago in Monte-Carlo but then fell by the same result to Jannik Sinner to suggest there is a mentality issue behind his fluctuating performances on tour but he should have enough in these conditions to edge this first encounter. Back Korda to win outright, with Purcell proving he can dig in in Madrid.

TIP: SEBASTIAN KORDA TO WIN
