World number five Andrey Rublev overcame a tough test by 19-year-old Arthur Fils on Friday and he faces an even younger challenger next. The Russian looks the solid favourite to lift his 18th ATP title this weekend in Karen Khachanov and Frances Tiafoe’s absence, both of whom have positive records over him, and he can thank 18-year-old Juncheng Shang for ousting the latter in a shock result on Friday. Shang will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of around 142nd for his huge efforts this week in Hong Kong, backing up upsets over Laslo Djere and Botic van de Zandschulp with a career-best victory over Tiafoe, and he should receive the majority of the neutral support as the Chinese underdog despite wider political tensions.
However, Rublev is something of a renowned ‘flat-track bully’ at this level with a strong pedigree for completing at 250 and 500 tournaments once making the latter stages. Back the Russian to edge through a likely three-setter against yet another exciting Chinese up-and-comer.
