THE PREDICTION

World number eight Andrey Rublev stopped the rot on Friday, snapping a four-match losing streak with a straight-sets win over Facundo Bagnis, but it remains to be seen how he fares against much tougher opposition. The 26-year-old has looked a shadow of himself since a controversial disqualification from the Dubai Tennis Championships semi-finals, as the defending champion there, for aggressive behaviour but his typical on-court self-flagellation was one day bound to spill over.

World number 28 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is similarly looking for an upturn in form, failing to win back-to-back matches since a run to the quarter-finals in Dubai back in February, but he avoided an upset in straight sets against Jerry Shang on Friday to look ready to compete here. Normal service would suggest Rublev is too controlled to suffer defeat to ADF’s fluctuating level, leading as he does their head-to-head 3-0, but this looks an interesting clash between two players not quite themselves. Back Rublev to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
