THE PREDICTION

32-year-old Alison Riske-Armitraj looks set to break back inside the top 30 on the WTA tour after back-to-back three-set victories over former top 10ers in Petra Kvitova and Jelena Ostapenko so far. The current world number 35 will be ecstatic with the progress she has found on tour since returning from a long injury lay-off last season, with three finals reached over the last 12 months including the Linz Open late last year where she won the third title of her career. This is a huge opportunity for one of Riske-Armitraj or world number 46 Yulia Putintseva to reach a quarter-final at this level and the Kazakh grabbed one of the best results of her career on Wednesday when beating world number three Paula Badosa – albeit via a second-set retirement. A hardcourt surface should favour Riske-Armitraj that little but more and the American leads this head-to-head 2-1 at tour level, so backing her to edge through seems a reasonable risk here.
