THE PREDICTION

World number 16 Alexander Zverev made a big improvement on his return from injury with a brilliant comeback victory over Jiri Lehecka on Monday and he backed that up with a solid straight-sets victory over Christopher O’Connell. The former world number two suffered a serious ankle injury in the semi-finals of Roland-Garros last summer and only returned to the tour at the Australian Open in January, so there is plenty of hard work ahead of him yet. This should be a tough test against world number 67 Lorenzo Sonego after the Italian stunned fourth-seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in straight sets on Wednesday. The 27-year-old is far better than his current ranking suggests but he has struggled to find the peak of his powers for much of the last two seasons. Zverev beat Sonego in straight sets on clay back in 2021 but this seems likelier to see three sets than two. Zverev should be able to find a way through to the semi-finals in conditions that better-suit him but back the German to earn at least a set for caution’s sake. You could consider adding a tiebreak into the equation here.
