THE LOWDOWN

ALEXANDER ZVEREV

World number three Alexander Zverev is yet to drop a set at the Australian Open after an assured win over Radu Albot on Friday. The 24-year-old enjoyed the best year of his career last season with a Gold Medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games and a second WTA Finals title the stand-out achievements alongside four tour titles including two Masters from Madrid and Cincinnati. Zverev finished runner-up to Dominic Thiem at the 2020 US Open from two sets up but that looks to have galvanised the German into vast improvements since.

DENIS SHAPOVALOV

World number 14 Denis Shapovalov won the day between two of the biggest servers on tour, taking out in-form Reilly Opelka in four sets on Friday. The Canadian is through to the second week at the Australian Open for a first time but he has a way to go yet to emulate his best Grand Slam showing after a stunning run to the semi-finals at Wimbledon last year. 22-year-old Shapovalov is riding a seven-match winning streak now after winning the ATP Cup alongside Felix Auger-Aliassime at the start of the year.

THE PREDICTION

This should be an entertaining clash between two top players. It remains to be seen if Alexander Zverev is purring after three comfortable matches this week or perhaps a little unpractised against the big guns but Denis Shapovalov definitely comes in hot after playing 13 sets. A tight three-set victory for Zverev at the ATP Cup at the start of the year looks a decent benchmark for this seventh meeting between the two, with the German leading their head-to-head record 4-2. Shapovalov will have his chances here and this could well go to five sets before a winner is found but taking Zverev to win and at least one tiebreak in the match looks a decent combination.
