ALEXANDER SHEVCHENKO VS EMIL RUUSUVUORI PREDICTION
World number 61 Alexander Shevchenko beat seventh seed Fabian Marozsan in tight straight sets on Monday to make a big statement of intent at the Geneva Open. The 23-year-old first came to the fore with an impressive purple patch in April last season, winning the Madrid Challenger before a run to the third round at the Masters event later that month, but he has so far struggled to push on in 2024 since ending last season as runner-up in his first final at the Metz Open.
World number 66 Emil Ruusuvuori is capable of much better tennis than his current deflated ranking suggests but he has similarly struggled to build on reaching his first tour final at the start of the year, finishing runner-up to Andrey Rublev at the Hong Kong Open. The 25-year-old brought a five-match losing streak into Geneva after losing in straight sets to Marcos Giron at the Italian Open two weeks ago but he avenged that result over Giron on Monday for a much-needed confidence boost.
Shevchenko is the more comfortable player on clay with some strong momentum coming into this first encounter but it will be interesting to see how Ruusuvuori reacts to snapping his poor streak. Back the Kazakh to edge this first encounter outright.
