THE PREDICTION
23-year-old Alexander Shevchenko looks set for a huge 2024 if he can build on his breakthrough level from last season, with Monday’s three-set victory over sixth seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry an encouraging result indeed. The Russian brings a career-high ATP world ranking of 48th into Adelaide after finishing runner-up to Ugo Humbert at the Moselle Open in November and he took Holger Rune to three sets before defeat last week in Brisbane. World number 71 Christopher O’Connell will receive partisan support as a home underdog here in Adelaide but, despite a strong start against Arthur Rinderknech on Tuesday, this looks too steep of a test for the 29-year-old. Shevchenko has beaten the liked of Karem Khachanov, Stan Wawrinka and Taylor Fritz in recent times and he should be considered a top 30 challenger this season. Back the Russian to win outright.
TIP: ALEXANDER SHEVCHENKO TO WIN
