THE PREDICTION
26-year-old Alexander Bublik set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 20th this week after finishing runner-up to Ugo Humbert at the Dubai 500 on Saturday. The Kazakh may have ridden his luck after second seed Andrey Rublev was defaulted late in the third set of their semi-final epic but impressive wins over the likes of Tallon Griekspoor and Jiri Lehecka will have prepared him well for a good tilt at Indian Wells this fortnight.
19-year-old up-and-comer Juncheng Shang will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 123rd after beating in-form Jordan Thompson comfortably on his debut here in the desert. The Chinese qualified impressively this week to make his main draw bow at Indian Wells and he enjoyed a brilliant start to 2024 with an eye-catching run to the semi-finals of the Hong Kong Open, upsetting the likes of Frances Tiafoe and Laslo Djere before a tight defeat to the aforementioned Rublev. Bublik’s hammer serve should cause the Chinese youngster too many problems in this first meeting between the two but Shang has earned a cautious pick here. Back Bublik to win outright.
TIP: ALEXANDER BUBLIK TO WIN
