THE PREDICTION

Former world number 17 Cristian Garin beat in-form Dominik Koepfer in straight set son Tuesday for an impressive start to the Munich Open, backing-up his surprise run to the semi-finals in Estoril before a three-set exit to eventual champion Hubert Hurkacz. The 27-year-old won the most recent of his five ATP titles at Chile Open, on home clay, in 2021 but he has struggled to find anything like his best tennis this side of the covid-19 pandemic – having been a real consistent force on this surface before.

World number 70 Alex Michelsen is untested in these conditions, as an early exit at the Houston Open earlier this month attests, but he has so far risen to all challenges. The 19-year-old has yet to play a full season on tour as a professional but he has already finished runner-up at an ATP 250, in Newport last summer, and reached the third round of a Grand Slam in Melbourne back in January. The conditions heavily favour Garin, who won the Munich Open and the aforementioned Houston Open in 2019, but a first meeting between the two feels lengthy. Back the Chilean to earn at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors.

TIP: CRISTIAN GARIN TO WIN A SET
