THE PREDICTION

Defending champion Alex de Minaur brought a career-high ATP world ranking of ninth into the Mexican Open and he marked that recent improvement with a first victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas, having lost each of their last 11 meetings, in the quarter-finals. The 25-year-old was in a real battle with rising star Jack Draper on Friday but the Brit was clearly labouring by the end of the second set before retiring in the third to see De Minaur the slight favourite coming into this final. The Acapulco crowd will back the Aussie after his exploits here in recent seasons but world number 11 Casper Ruud looks in excellent shape on hardcourts right now, bringing his new ethos to bear with impressive comebacks over two young talents in Ben Shelton and Holger Rune from a set down to each. The pair have not met since De Minaur won their Next Gen ATP Finals clash back in 2019 but this promises to be a much tighter contest than that consummate straight setter. Three sets seem likelier than two so consider that option in lieu of a winner or lean towards defending champion De Minaur – with Ruud’s defeat to Jordan Thompson last week seeing him 1-4 in hardcourt finals.

TIP: TOTAL 3 SETS
