27-year-old Aleksandar Vukic set a career-high ATP world ranking of 50th in August after a career-best run to the round of 16 at the Canada Masters not long after making his maiden ATP tour final at the Atlanta Open. The Aussie Taylor Fritz all the way before defeat in Atlanta and victories over Borna Coric and Sebastian Korda in Toronto looked like pushing on before a defeat to Gael Monfils knocked some wind out of his sails. Vukic brings a three-match losing streak into Shanghai but he looks the slight favourite in these conditions against world number 61 Roberto Carballes Baena, who is one of the more ‘specialist’ clay lovers on tour. RCB stunned an out of sorts Holger Rune at the US Open in August but he has lost each of his two matches on hardcourts since. Winning the Marrakech Open in April makes this season the 30-year-old’s best yet but he will likely have to wait until next February for more success. Back Vukic to win outright.
